How a Beef Hot Dog Became a Steak in a Bun

The story of the world's best hot dog starts with a question: what would happen if we made a hot dog the way we make our steaks?

KC Cattle Company is a working ranch outside Kansas City, founded in 2016 by U.S. Army Ranger Patrick Montgomery. Patrick's American Wagyu has earned places on steakhouse menus and in features in Bloomberg, Forbes, and on Father's Day tables across the country. But the product that put KC Cattle Company on the national map didn't start with a porterhouse or a tomahawk. It started with a hot dog.

In 2019, Food & Wine Magazine ran a national hot dog ranking. KC Cattle Company's wagyu hot dog was named Best Hot Dog in the World — and the demand was immediate. Six years later, that title still holds.

In July 2025, Food & Wine returned to write again. Food & Wine recipe developer Adam Dolge, a Culinary Institute of America–trained chef, tried our wagyu hot dogs grilled, pan-seared, air-fried, and boiled.

Wagyu Hot Dog Questions

Our hot dogs are made with 100% American Wagyu beef from our veteran-owned ranch operation. Unlike standard hot dogs, ours are uncured, free of added nitrates and nitrites (except those naturally occurring in beet powder), and seasoned with a clean blend of paprika, garlic, onion, and natural spices that lets the Wagyu's buttery marbling do the talking. Voted Best Hot Dog in the World by Food & Wine Magazine in 2019, and reviewed again by Food & Wine in July 2025 as "the best hot dogs I ever tasted.

Our wagyu hot dogs are fully cooked, so you only need to heat them through. Based on Food & Wine's testing, grilling and pan-frying are the recommended methods. Both produce a crisp casing snap and a buttery, juicy interior. Grill over medium heat for 4-5 minutes, flipping occasionally for even charring. Pan-sear in a cast iron skillet over medium with a teaspoon of oil for 4-6 minutes, browning all sides. Air-fry at 400°F for 3-4 minutes for an alternative quick method. Avoid boiling, it dilutes the flavor that makes these worth the price.
